1-2" is plenty if you don't want a DSB. Some people run with no sand at all. Generally speaking, it's not deep enough to operate as a DSB unless it's at least 6".

I believe you should. The purpose of the overflow is to strain the filmy scum that accumulates at the top of your water column and then send it down to the skimmer. The teeth on your overflow will increase your capacity to skim.
I could be dead wrong on that, but it just seems to me that the teeth on your overflow are to your skimmer as the saliva in your mouth is to your stomach.
if you think logically on that subject about the teethe.. with out teeth you have more surface skimming.... the teeth dont come out of the water thus increasing surface skimming area
hmm.... look of a DSB after it matures....? I'm just having trouble following you here. Could you elaborate on this? To me a SSB looks just like a DSB except for the depth of course....
