I got a call last week from a guy I know breaking his tank, he had some corals that he was going to dispose of if I didn't take them so I went to pick them up. I don't keep corals, I usually just stick to fish and invertebrates.
The tank has only been set up for a few months while I cycle it but I figured I'd take them and try them rather than him dispose of them. At least they stand a fighting chance.
The various Zoa's are doing great, good colour and growing well. I didn't think they would grow that quickly but within 7 days they have attached to nearby rocks.
the Larger leather on the other hand doesn't look to be coping so well but I would like to try and save it if possible and I don't want to frag it if I can help it. I've been researching these a lot trying to find answers and the usual sulking and shedding but I wanted to make sure its not something more and if it is if there was anything I could do to help it.
I've only had it for a week and it did put on a massive sulk, it was very constricted but eventually opened up a little. It pretty much shed straight away and slouched along the rocks but at the time I didn't know you sometimes needed to help it get rid of the mucus so I left it to do its thing.
I noticed that it was getting damaged from lying on the rocks, the top looked relatively healthy and it was opening its polyps but not all the way I don't think but the bottom was showing signs on damage from where it was pressed against the rocks.
I moved it to try and brace it up and for it to get better flow over the top to help it remove the shedding.
Water checks out OK, I've changed the lighting thinking it was that. I've increased flow to it. Is there anything else I can try and can somebody tell me if its decaying or just going through a stage and it will come out the other end? its just not looking good to me but I don't know a lot about corals as I needed to jump in with it.
pic isn't the best but the damage to the flesh off the rock it was lay on and the darker (black?) tint around the edge of the coral is what has me most worried.
