Say hello to my (new) little friends......(Elegance/Scolymia)

Honestly, I'm more of an SPS keeper now days, but as soon as I picked these up I knew I would have to share with the LPS fanatics too! I have been eyeing out these two corals since they came in, a little over nine months ago. they came in with a transhipped aussie order (mostly acans), and these two were in the box too. My friend, who brought them in, held on to these two.

Long story short, I was over at his house again the other day, and he wanted to get a couple other things going on in his tank, and asked, "If you could get anything out of my tank, what would it be?" I pointed/drooled quiickly at these two corals, as usual. An hour or two later, and a couple beers later, he reluctantly bagged them up for me, and off we went to the new home!

Enough chit chat, on with the PICS!!!

Elegance (Catalaphyllia jardinei):

Scolymia sp.:

Now remember this elegance has been in an aquarium for over nine months now, continuously growing bigger! This guy is absolutely out of control!:eek2: Both are much, much brighter than the pics can show!

In all of the pics I have placed a frag plug for size reference, the head of the plug is an inch in diameter.

Here they are during acclimation (yes, I drip acclimated them - no chances taken here!):

Note that his skeleton is only an inch at the bottom, going up to about 3-3.5 inches at the top.

You can barely see the frag plug in the lower right-hand side of this pic, but his skeleton is only about three inches in diameter (he is still very plump, even after the drive home!)

The top pics were taken after being fed on Sunday night, and they are both expanding more than that now. I measured last night, and the Scolymia expands over eight inches in diameter! I will get some more pics and post them soon.

Would like to get an Elegance for my tank (180) mostly softies, some LPS. What do you feed the elegance?

Thanks

Anything, everything, whatever! No, j/k, but he will eat just about anything! I've only had him since Saturday night, but he's been living on (at my friends) Rod's food, squid, mysis, frags that fall off of the rack, you name it, he'll eat it pretty much. I'm going to stick with the real meaty foods for him in my tank, probably Rod's. I have some krill and other shrimp in the freezer I can finally feed off now too.

This elegance was soooooo sticky, that when I lifted him out of my friends tank, a few tentacles' tips stuck to my hand! I have never dealt with an elegance thats so sticky, like a carpet anemone! Most of the time you can pick them up with no problem/no sticking, but not this guy!

NICE SCORE!!!! I love my Elegance and my scoly. Congrats and they both look awesome. Now you will find yourself seduced by the dark side ... LPS addictions begin just this way. Oh -- I am only going to get a couple.....

Haha! I have been seduced by the dark side already. lol. I have 4 species of acans (over 15 morphs of lords), several micro species (over 10 morphs), two species and/or morphs of duncans, 8 or nine morphs of chalice..... the list goes on. Its just that lately I have been picking up more SPS frags and hadn't got any new LPS fo around 4 months (I have had all my other ones for a while).

I'm in the midst of seeting up a 400 gal system, and I knew I had to jump on these to help fill it up!

It is true that elegances will eat most of anything but try to keep the pieces on the small side. I made a mistake of feeding my Aussie a long strip of squid it looked constipated for over a week.. :-).

lol - good point. I had a very similar thing happen with one of my fav acans. He got a 2" squid leg and took it down one polyp! The poylp looked like it wanted to burst for a week or so!

Also, my UFO micro tends to grab onto the biggest chunks of food out of the Rod's food, but next thing you know.... its gone!!? That little guy can take some food thats for sure! I make sure he doesn't get fed more than every three days - dont want to over feed him.

Do you have any pics of your elegance, maybe a link? Is there an elegance show-off thread? I'd love to see some more healthy specimens for I know that they're few and far between these days.

there are several elegance threads -- search if you can!
Thanks! I always have trouble with the search engine here though, but I'll page through as I'm sure its well worth it!

On another note, I'm pretty convinced at this point that my "scolymia" is a cynaria sp., none the less just as cool.
