I can't seem to locate any scarlet hermit crabs locally. Is this unusual? Is there any sort of shortage on them at the moment? I haven't been in the hobby for a few years but years back they were plentiful at any LFS.
As with most critters, they come and go as places get in new batches. Being a more coveted (for lack of a better term) species of hermit they are in higher demand than most others. I see them as much as I do blue legs, red legs and thin stripes. They go quick when they hit the stores.
My only crab is a scarlet hermit. He was the first saltwater animal I bought and is now nearing ten years old. I have no idea what their expected lifespan is but it wouldn't feel right to have a tank without one, to me at least.
I've heard reports of land hermits living up to 30 years so it doesn't surprise me that your Scarlet has reached 10 years. They may be like lobsters and will live very long lives in proper conditions.
