Sea urchin dieing?

I have had a long spine sea urchin in my reef tank for about 2 years now. I think its dieing because its losing its spines. Should I remove it before it dies or does it matter?

i would remove it, they can have poisons and i wouldn't risk them entering the tank.

I have had them come back from that point. It means something is wrong and it will die if uncorrected, so do some testing/observing and figure out what it is and fix it.
