seahorses not eating

I got two Reidi seahorses on Tuesday and I haven't seen them eat yet!! I give them about 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch chunk of frozen mysis daily. Is there anything else that I can do?

Try enticing them with something live, to get them eating, then try the mysis. Ghost shrimp, adult brine shrimp ... anything that will get them going.

Do you have a lot of amphipods in your tank? They might be feasting on them. If so, the pod population will dwindle quickly and they will turn to the mysis.

Also, are you sure they were eating mysis before you got them?

They went after the frozen mysis, but they just can't seem to catch it. I am not sure that they were able to catch any before they went into the filter. They came from ORA so I am pretty sure at somepoint they were eating frozen mysis. Anyway, gonna try to feed them tomorrow twice and fast on saturday. My nitrates were about 40 ppm so maybe that is doing it.

Glad to see they are interested in food again.

You will need to do lots of water changes or introduce some macro algae to get the nitrates down. You'll be putting a lot of food in the tank daily ... so the nitrates will climb quickly ... hair algae city!

Yeah, just tested nitrates and they were 35ppm. I have quite a bit of macro in the tank so I will probably just do a 15% water change tonight or tomorrow!!

my seahorses eat mysis, but only if its hikarii, They won't touch San Francisco Bay, Also if they are not tank raised they probably won't ever eat. You can try ordering a bag of amphipods. I would also get a lot of hermit crabs to eat any excess food and not fast. They need the opportunity to eat. Oh, try kent marine garlic extract to stimulate their eatin. Good luck

Any seahorse whether CB or WC can and will refuse frozen foods from the stress of shipping. If the horse was indeed eating frozen prior to arrival, then it should take to it again in a few days. That is one of the reasons to QT ANY seahorse in a barebottom tank. Makes it really easy to tell if they are eating or not. Once you are sure they are eating the frozen food you can put them in the display tank after a week or 2.If you already have horses in the tank and are adding more, QT 6-8 weeks minimum.

Try getting some live mysids or appropraitely sized ghost shrimp to try and entice them to eat. Hoprse can't go more than 2-3 days without eating and even that isn't good. Usually once they get to 3-4 days they are past the point of no return and usually require tube feedings until they start eating on their own again.

Hope they start eating for you soon.
