I built a plywood tank back in 2002. Spent about $600 to make a 320g ( inside demensions tank ). The tanks untimate demise ( actually still in use at a school was not the tank but the humidty if produced in the house evaporating around 6-8 gallons a day in our old house and ruining the woodwork ).
However really anything under a standard 180g tank ( particualarly it your doing a standard 120g ) by the time you account for materials, time, etc. Your better off just getting a stock 120g. That is unless your doing it for the satisfaction as much or more than for cost savings.
The Aquatic Ecosystems stuff needs temps above 50 to cure for 1 week. Here in MN, I was doing in spring where the temps still get too cool at night so I went with the Gliden rust bar stuff ( I don't recall the part # but you can search here for my posts ). Also one of the other downsides to the Aquatic Ecosystems stuff is that if you have to have it shipped it is considered hazardous material and shipping is more expensive.
