Second half of package

Holy Patooty!

The second half of the package was supposed to arrive at 5:30pm MST at Southwest Air Cargo. Our family went out for an early dinner prior to going to the airport, but the service at the restaurant really, umm, sucked, so we weren't able to get to the airport until about 6:45pm.

Well, we got home with 4 boxes (3 regular size, 1 large); set a tarp out on the floor, and started unpacking. The stuff is so fresh and so alive, you almost feel you need to sick Gloria Allred on it!

When we set the rock out on the tarp, an octopus crawled out of one of the rocks, and a spaghetti worm eviscerated itself from another rock! I said, "the octopus is bad; we've got to give it away." My wife said, "we've got to keep it!" So, the 3 gallon hermit crab tank became a nano for an octopus. (Luckily, I had a spare 50W heater; but I'm way short on powerheads). The one red emerald who crawled out of the rocks is an octopus companion for now (until he becomes lunch). Richard selected a killer large piece (hernia city; Landlord, you saw that piece) with what looks like a staghorn coral on it, and several chunks with Siderastrea radians colonies.

We spent until past 11pm unpacking, stacking, acclimating, etc. Tonight, I've got to read up on octopus care to deal with it for the spouse (I know they're short-lived, but we're responsible for it now).

Extras which were included were two gorgonians, an unidentified pink-tipped anemone, and an unidentified mushroom coral.

I didn't bother counting the hermits & snails (and frankly, I don't care :bum: ) I'll be spending all night staring at the tank!

I'm attaching one picture to whet y'all's appetite.

Richard, you won't see this message until you get back; I hope you have a great time on your vacation!

Thanks for the feedback!

Just popped into the office to answer the mail before sailing....

Nice job on the aquascape......the big rock was Killer, just came out of the Gulf 2 days ago....

The octopus is the dwarf type... two year life span...lays eggs and dies....but a neat critter...needs crabs to eat....

Sea Ya in a week

Misidentifications:

The unidentified anemone is most probably a Condylactis anemone. The unidentified mushroom is actually probably an anemone, most likely a Epicystis (rock flower) anemone.

I've attached a photo of the octopus making short work of the red emerald crab. Got to fish out some of those hairy crabs from the main tank to feed "Octo," as the kids call him (her? it?)

Again, great rock! When I've got pictures put up on my personal web site, I'll post the url.

Good score. I was kinda hoping for an octopus. Maybe in that second shipment i'll get lucky.

Enjoy!

You know octopus are super smart animals, I've heard them compared to human children.

Be careful with the lids on your tank...please.

And be careful with what you wish for.

It is amazing what can hitchhike on TBS rock.

Pretty much aquascaped to my satisfaction

A few minor rearrangements, some work with MS-Frontpage, and voila!

Visit the link here for a panoramic shot of 'the tank' (120 g with a 55 g package + 1 extra killer rock!). There's some narrative verbiage that you're welcome to skip; don't try this with a dial-up line...

It's hard to tell from the photo (unless I try to take a top view shot with all the pumps off), but the aquascape design is islands & canyons

Looks superb. The Gorgonians look awesome. The killer rock is just that, Killer!

Much Success to ya!

thanks for always helping me out as well!

"Look Mom, 100th post" guess I better get an avatar :)

Very nice rocks , the aquascape looks excellent! nice website too ! maybe you can post a link on how to make that mantis trap? did it work for you?
Thanks!

Thanks for the nice comments, but can't take credit.

Full credit for the rocks HAS to go to Mother Nature & TBS.

The aquascaping ideas, I got from reading CMA & other posters here & elsewhere.

Do you really want me to credit MS-Frontpage for the site  ?

Mantis trap: Richard's suggestion, though this has been mentioned in several places. Take a plastic soda bottle; cut it in half transversely; turn the top upside down & push it into the bottom. Voila! Critter motel. Critters smell bait & wander in, but they're too dumb to figure out how to get out. Never caught the small mantis. Did grab a crab with it. (Actually crabs are very neuronally deficient. Dangling bait attached to a stick works; the crab grabs the bait and begins to munch; you then gently pull the stick up and the crab doesn't let go :p )

hdtran- what did you end up doing with the octopus? Did you get a couple of mantis in your shipment? Maybe you can throw the octopus in with the rocks to simplify catching the mantis. Are you looking to sell him? If so I'm interested. THanks

Octopus came in on the second half package. Fresh off the boat, so either boat run or coral. It is my impression that TBS's package customers get freshly harvested, hand-picked rock. They won't look for octopuses (octopi?) for you, but they'll get you the sizes and shapes to help your tank look good.
