I had a 55 galon reef tank back in the 80s and I'm sure many things have changed since that time. Loooking for help in determining proper substrate, filtering, lighting etc.

I am in the planning stages of a 75-90g mixed reef. See my blog.

Abstract:

Mixed reef tank with a variety of fish & hardy corals/inverts. All-natural filtration using live sand, rock, & refugia, & metal halide (T5s?) lights, low to high flow for eventual soft, SPS &/or LPS corals. Refugia will be separate from the sump to allow for maximum control on water flow rate & to include a DSB of Miracle mud & sugar sand. Water flow will initially include Turbelle or Vortech powerheads (max 1000 gph each) plus return flow of 500-600 gph.

Total system water volume = 75*0.7 + 18g sump + 20g ref = ~90 g (max flow 28x total vol & 50x net tank vol), or for a 90g tank = 90*0.7 +18 + 20 = ~ 105 g (25 to 40x).

Corals & Invertebrates:
Zoanthid Mushrooms - Zoanthus species
Button Polyp - Green - Epizoanthus species
Green Metallic Mushrooms - Actinodiscus species
Chili Coral - Alcyonium species (leather)
Live rock and hitchhikers
Tank cleaner crew

Fish:
Royal Gramma - a great choice
Wrasse ââ"šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å“ fairy & flasher
Clownfish - male and female (tank raised incl. Percula, Cinnamon, Maroon, Sebae, Damsels)
Dottyback ââ"šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å“ Fridmanni

Equipment List:

75-90 AGA glass aquarium w/siphon overflow, glass cover
Siphon box - single (700 gph) - LifeReef
Oak Stand & canopy (maybe DIY)
2 x 175W MHs, electronic ballast (maybe T5s)
2 x Actinic PCs or T5s
2 Turbelle Powerheads 7400/2 (185-1057 gph)
Wavemaker of some sort
Aragamax sugar/live sand - 2ââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ layer
Sump - 20-30g tank w/space for heater(s), skimmer, other probes
External return pump - Iwaki MD 30RLXT - 960gph
Automatic top-off
Refugium w/macro algae & infauna - 20 g w/65w PC light 6700k, Miracle mud/sugar sand
Quaruntine tank - 10g w/bio-filter, power head, PC lights, heater
Accoutrements

No skimmer (at first anyway)
No RO/DI for makeup water (dechlorination only) - where I live the water is excellent w/almost no nutrients in it.

Excellent info, thanx. Do you know of a good but reasonably priced tank, predrilled that will ship to your home?
