Setting up a new tank: curing the rock

Hello friends.

I have setting up a new tank in my living room and I really want to focus on producing a clean, phosphate and nitrate free rock. I selected Pukani because even though it isn't the cleanest to start, the look is just the best in my opinion. Now I want to focus on the curing process. I personally don't want to use acid, but I'm not opposed to bleach. Can you please share your curing methods and what has been successful for you? Please also include any heaters, powerheads, etc. you found helpful. I have plenty of time for the cure and I'm not in a rush. Thank you so much!

Hi Chris. Look up a BRS tv episode regarding this. They compared bleach, acid, and water, and the bleach did the best. I started mine in a tub of regular water with bleach last Saturday with a recirc pump. Dumped it last night and hosed off the rock, then started again with fresh water but no bleach. Going to let that sit for a few days, then dump again, rinse again, fill again and add Prime. Let that go for a few days, then remove to the new tank for starting a cycle. I probably went a little faster than I should have, but oh well, I gotta wait for the tank to cycle anyway, so what the heck. HTH.

Some people say don't do this, but I put the dry rock in my tank when I filled the tank up with freshly made saltwater and started the cycle. So you can say, mines cured during the cycle.

The first 2 batches I am doing with water right out of the hose. The last and longest I am doing will be with RODI. The first 2 are in my mind to knock off the surface crud. RODI in the third should start to pull elements out of the rock. Just like you don't run RODI water through copper pipe because it will pull the copper out of the pipe over time and leave you with failing pipe, in my head it makes sense that it would pull elements out of the rock. I probably would have done all of mine in RODI had I had the RODI set up done, but I didn't and wanted to get it soaking in something. I should be getting my tanks tomorrow for my water change station, and that will allow me to get the third (and longest) soak done in RODI. Like I said above, though, I am taking the slow approach to cycling my tank, and they will be leaching out whatever else they leach out during the cycle in DT, and I can live with that knowing I gave them a few weeks head start. Million ways to skin this cat IMO.

Greeting all,
In my class, we are going to put a Reef tank and it's a LED BioCube 32. My question is what kind of fish is capable of living In this tank?

Thank you for your time
