Setting up new Nanocube 24G

Hi guys,

I just got bitten by the reef bug and started a little 24G Nanocube, it is cycling right now and I am adding stuf and getting poorer by the second.
Anyhow.....this are the questions:
1) I was told to get rid of sponge filter and bio ball or ceramic whatyoushulmacallem and use bits and pieces of LR in the filter chamber in the back....input?? Right now i have sponge filter and active carbon that is it.

2) protein skimmer, been thinking about getting one, where should i place it? Left or center chamber? the right is where the pump is so i figure is out of the question.
If i use a skimmer, should i use any other kind of filtration? And if so what? Stick with sponge or use LR fragments?

Thanks......

I will be back for more..i need all the help i can get.

To answer your first question, I think almost everyone (myself included) gets rid of the sponge and ceramic rings because they are nitrate factories. Some people keep the sponge in, but you have to make sure it is VERY clean all the time. You are better off getting filter floss IMO and simply tossing it when you are done. I have LR rubble in my back compartments as well because it never hurts to have some more natural filtration in these little tanks.

To your second question, what protein skimmer are you looking at getting? There are a very limited (I believe the total is under 3) number of skimmers that will actually fit inside of a NC. One is the Fission Skimmer which if you read, does not work. The other that I know of is the Sapphire Nano Skimmer built specifically for this tank which so far has gotten some pretty good feedback. I would say put it in the second chamber. You can also go with a HOT skimmer such as a Coralife CSS65 but you would have to go topless for this option.

Hope this helped answer your questions. Good luck, you will love this tank!

get the sapphire skimmer its made to fit your tank custom with the hood on as i see it it is the only skimmer that goes with the all in one theme of the nanocube

You can run a SW aquarium on a wet/dry filter or bioball filter. I hate when someone says oh they are nitrate factories. I think you could do a FO tank with a bioball filter. why not?? Thats what im doing but my bioballs are going to be fully sumbeged.
