That's actually not a bad start. It is a bit overexposed but "it cleans up nice."
With film cameras, how and where you get your film developed makes a difference. Likewise, most images can benefit from from post processing in Photoshop or Elements....
i don't know your camera but if that was taken using an automatic mode you might want to see if it has some kind of exposure compensation. Your shot is 1-2 stops overexposed. You can bring some of that back with software but if you blow-out the highlights they're gone forever.
Learn to use the histogram feature of your camera. It's a great well to tell at a glance if the shot that you just took has any real problems.
