setup question

Hello all,

I would like to know if a fluval 404 canister filter can be used as a main pump to setp my tank with a sump and refugium. can it be used for intake and output pump? I would install the plumbing and connect the fluval to the pvc as the pump that runs everything. I would of course remove all filter media from the canister. maybe leave some carbon.
I thought I would try to make use for fluval 404's (Output: 340 U.S. gallons per hour 1300 liters per hour) pump capacity
Has anyone done this before?

I havn't done that but I was actually looking into buying a 404 for the exact same purpose. it sounds like a good idea right?

Thanks for the response.

That would be huge, if I could make use of the fluval 404
To run my new setup.
I'll PM Youngsilver for more information.

I did it, but it doesnt work very well, the pump pulls water by siphon, and it is hard to keep a syphon when the pump is not much lower then the intake. My canister was sitting on teh ground beside a 10g tank that was used as my sump. I would have to put the intake in the tank above the sump, prime it by pouring water in the intake, let it get running, the kill the pump and close the valve at the bottom of the intake hose. I would then move it to the sump and turn it on. I hated it as it wasnt very reliable. You'd be better off buying a used rio on ebay haha. Hope I helped

I understand what your saying. There would be no other way to start the syphon unless it was put directly into the sump. If it's connected to plumbing there's no way to start it.

Thanks for your response.
