Sexing cardinals

to sex them, you simply get two to spawn, and the one holding the eggs is male...I don't mean to state the obvious but aside from extreme experts knowing something they havn't shared yet, the sexing of this species is almost impossible. You can't rely on dorsal fin length, my female has a longer banner fin, while most claim the males do, some tell you to look at the jaw, males have a squarish jaw line, this is misleading since the ability to expand the jowls is strickly muscular and not always present. My male is identical to female until he's ready to spawn, then he bunches up a bit more. If you have multiple bangaii's in a tank, a pair for instance, if they are not trying to kill each other, you most likely have two females or a pair. Heres some info you may wanna read up on them, I've managed 3 succesful spawning since following this advice: http://www.raingarden.us/banggaimanual.pdf

fwiw, newest spawning occured Sunday afternoon, and the 1st spawning babies are only 2 months old. They keep themselves busy!

If you are interested in breeding them, I recommend my bangaii breeding log located here: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=969634

I'm not an expert at all and this is actually my first attempt to breed and raise marine fish. So my methods may be more appealing to you seeing how I'm definatly a reefer on a buget, and yet I've got babies everywhere! Good luck and glad to hear you're interested in these guys! Gotta keep em tank breeding and off that endangered species list.
