ShapeLock is a plastic product that you can soften in hot water and then mold into shape. It looks fantastically useful for an aquarium, but I have no idea if it's really safe or not. I wrote to their support email--not really expecting any help--and was pleasantly surprised to get back a thoughtful answer.
Hi,
We are researching your questions and will reply with more details soon. ShapeLock is non-toxic and as far as we are aware, does not leach any chemicals. We have seen aquarium applications and the primary problem there has been the growth of algae on the ShapeLock material itself. For the application you are describing this property sounds like an advantage. You are right in remarking that soaking a material in 80 degree salt water for years is a tough environment. We want to verify that this an appropriate application for ShapeLock so we will research this further to the extent that we can and inform you in the next week.
Best Regards,
ShapeLock Support
I bet the stuff is as safe as any of the other plastic products we put in our tanks, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask. I'll post more as I get it. If you are curious about the stuff, order the free (+ shipping) sample from their web site. It's pretty cool.
Too bad it doesn't come in coralline purple.
