Hello everyone!

I have a question? Since we have and had shark owners why dont they get together a make a post like at the top of the page here and put in as much info a they can or are willing to and than anyone that is even thing about a shark could just read it along with scott michaels books, this way people dont get flamed and others that take this hobby serious dont get fired up..... This post isnt to start a fight just an idea ....

Nataz, I completely agree with Mitzel. However, I would still like to see a Sharks section were we can at least collaborate on our opinions.

YES i agree totaly....but it would only need to say one thing

SCOTT MICHAELS SHARKS AND RAYS...BUY IT....end of thread

U both are right ! But we have so many people that want to know about these animals and there so much info the as ADULT some kind of thred or room... what ever works... WE have lots of people that use this site and lots of info so instead of jumping down someone throat or acting like ur way or now way come together put ur 3 cents in and educate the hungry minds....im sure at some point people didnt agree with have saltwater nor fresh water tanks but we talk about the here everyday.... what can it hurt?

While this book is a good starting point it's also a bit over rated. Half the time the min tank size given is too small. And there is no book that can substitute for good advice from somebody in that situation. a book can only answer so many questions .

I completely agree with everyone. What could hurt by designating a particular section of this website to have minds collaborate on a prticular species especially one so talked about. Isn't that what a forum is for? I think we should start a section and people we are all old enough to understand how to take advice and info from other individuals. So I say create a section for Sharks it could be a stepping stone for definitive questions/answers.

A shark page would be sweet, books are good but myself dont like $50 to $60 for a book to read once that might not have the answers i need. All the info on my shark was for other shark owners.Even if no one agrees on everything someone could use bits of all info to help.

I think a shark (or shark and ray) section would be great. Scott Michael's book is great (certainly the best out there), but it does not have everything. Practical experience goes a long way too. I keep sharks (mostly horn sharks) and love to read all the differing opinions about right and wrong ways to do things. So few people have Zebra horn sharks, or Japanese Horn sharks, heck even Port Jackson's which are common. Hopefully this will change as keepers become more sophisticated and devote the time and money to big systems to house these fish correctly.

Library?

Well ok i think a shark thread would be no where neer as good as books, people on this thread arnt marine biologists and mistakes are made, as well as opinions are wrong most of the time. Some things work for some people not others. Scott Michaels book out lines sharks and gives facts based on great experience. When getting into sharks one should buy his book and visit your local library for info, then turn to people on the boards for further advice that is to be taken with a grain of salt always.(not saying people on here dont know about sharks im just saying its easy to get WRONG info) It is very easy to get incorrect information on here but in a book most likely it is fact or proven research. I think a shark thread is a great idea...but someone needs to watch what is posted...making sure no poor or out dated advice gets posted as sharks are beautiful and difficult to keep. But most of things posted that are hard fact are going to be from a book or research at one point. my .02!

I know for a fact at least two people on this site are marine biologists, and I'd still take what they say with a grain of salt. Anyone who blindly follows a strangers advice is asking for trouble, but I own Scott Michaels book and there is very little info there on keeping Atlantic Sharpnoses in captivity, but I know someone on a different board who could write pages about them. I do agree there is a lot of mis-information out there, but I like to hear differing opinions. Unfortunately for shark keepers most people are speaking from opinion, not what they have learned from years of experience. If everything you learn about sharks is from the internet, I hope you have a virtual aquarium. Still, I welcome a topic on sharks. It is on this site I found out about lrgclasper, who has two Mexican horn sharks. It was on this site I found out about the lfs where he obtained them, and where I hope in the future to be as lucky. I have been looking for a Heterodontus mexicanus for some time, as if I can obtain one, I will have five of the nine known species of Heterodontids.

Well, I believe that everyone is on favor of having a Shark section for all of us enthusiastic Shark owners even though we both agree/disagree on advice. After all this is a forum for open discussion not the truth written in stone. So when are the Moderators just going to create a section for Sharks and let it flourish? Should we send an E-mail to the Webmaster? Enough discussion lets get this done already! :-)

I just dont really think any shark should be kept in a tank, if you have ever dived with them maybe you can understand that. They are something that is amazing and easy to watch and enjoy in the wild. my opinion...unless you got a 10,000+ gal. tank that is ;)

I think a forum for shark keepers and potential shark keepers would be a great idea. There is a great deal of misinformation out there and the combined experiences of those of us that have kept sharks could guide those looking to branch out into shark husbandry. While buying books might sound like the logical approach there is no substitute for first hand experience. Most libraries don't carry books on shark keeping and the scientific journals usually focus on one aspect of shark behaviour or on their habits in the wild. I've been keeping sharks for over 20 years and I have experience that would probably conflict with the ideology of some members of this forum. Nonetheless, my experiences are what they are and if somebody wants to pick my brain because they want to try keeping sharks I think they should have a place to go. Any person determined enough to keep sharks after reading some of the posts on here has the determination necessary to make a real go of shark keeping. I remeber that there was a time when most marine fish were considered too difficult to keep. But over the years many advances have been made and we are not only keeping marines but breeding some too. The biggest obstacle in successful shark keeping is the size of the aquarium and some minor differences in shark physiology as opposed to bony fish. Otherwise, sharks are fish and the same rules (with a couple of exceptions) apply. This is my two cents worth, if you're interested.
