shopping list

My clowns have been laying eggs for quite some time now and I have always let the eggs just hatch into the tank. Well the other night I was reading some of the threds on her and I wan't the challenge. I told my wife about raising the fry and she thinks I am nuts.

I have phyto and rots going already and need a shopping list for the rest of the things I need. The clowns should have a batch within a couple of days. All suggestions will help. Thanks Jason

You got a spare tank (10g or so) kicking around for a grow out tank? Also going to need a filter of some sort most people I know seem to like a sponge filter. Going to need a heater and a thermometer for the grow out tank as well. Might think about trying to get setup for bbs hatching as well as that it probably going to be the next step if you succeed. Ohh and a small n.o. flourescent light to see the young. I've also read that sidelighting in the tank isn't always the best thing might want to dig through some old threads about that.

i havent had success rearing them yet.mine have laid eggs several times over the last years but being in display tank is the problem.

i started a thread in the DIY forum on my prop/breeding build.

hopefully with the new setup ill have better luck raising to maturity.

good luck to the both of us,ill subscribe to yours to help me

I think I am going shopping today. I plan on getting two 5 gallon tanks small heaters and sponge filters for each. I will put the sponge filters in my sump to get them seeded. I also will pick up bbs if they have the decap. I will start some just to get the habg of it.

Is it a good idea to keep a glass top on the fry tank to help with evap?

I was planning on having mine open top but dont know if it makes a difference

I imagine less evaporation would help keep salinity stable.but i would think that open top would help with O2 exchange.

would like to hear what others have to say or how they have their system setup

With the air bubble going I wouldn't think there would be to much of a propblem with air exchange.

I went to the LFS to grab some supplies and ended up coming out of the store with what I think is a pair of bangi cardinals. There were a 10 fish on one side of a 100 gallon and 2 on the other. The larger one looks like its mouth is stuffed. We will see how that turns out.

If they are mating I will have my hands full. I will be trying to different kinds of fish at the same time. I feel a lot more confident with the cardinals. If it is anything like ciclids I should be set. Breading those paid for my first reef.

I leave my fry tank open. I do have to top off daily. As long as I drip the top off water there is no problem.

I suppose glass tops would cut evaporation however, since I don't happen to have any, I don't use any. I put my fry and grow out tanks together on a shoe string budget. Basically, I mostly used stuff I had in storage. The good news is - it works. Neither the fry or juveniles require anything sophisticated.
