wondering how difficult basic shrimp like peppermint shrimp and emerald crabs are to keep

Peppermint shrimp are actually pretty easy to take care of has are emerald grabs. They are pretty much self caring creatures. The emerald crabs will eat a lot of your algae, they are real good for controlling bubble algae. The peppermint shrimp if Gulf will eat aiptaisia as well as fish foods and cleaning off rocks.

also i saw some clams at the store are they hard to manage and do they need anything special

Clams on the other hand do require more specialized care. Good water flow and a lot of lighting and a consistent water temperature. They also feed on thing's such as DT's and oyster eggs and mysis shrimp. They also require Calcium so you will need to dose your tank for it if you don't have a Calcium Reactor. You just want to make sure you do some home work on them and know what care the type you are thinking of getting requires. Because some are easier than others.

Snails are real cool to have, they are very good cleaners. As rob352 said the Turbo's can be the bulldozers of the tank. Most of the others aren't to bad. But the same can be said for crabs, they to can move things around.

I hope some of my information helps you.
