Sick Clam...nothing to lose...

Very nice. I'm glad you continued instead of removing it.

I have lost 5 Croceas in the last 7 months and for life of me(or the clams) can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I have a Derasa that is growing, slowly though and looks better all the time. I wish I had tried something when mine looked like that.

As I said before...It went down hill very quickly...I think I clogged it's gills with the phylopfeast and had changed out the phosphate remover media and replaced it with fresh. I think this started it's demise and the fresh water, Lugol's and a gentle powerhead to allow it to wash itself out was just what it needed. Of course I immediately removed the phosphate media and replaced it with carbon. It is still doing well today...I am SOOO HAPPY!!!

oh . maybe i guess lol ive never dipped my clams
just seems like a while. im used to dipping fish in my store

what is Lugol's..??

lugol's solution is a concentrated bio-available iodine supplement ( basically potassium iodide and iodine )

PS: still have fingers crossed, hopefully he is still on the right track :)

any new pics?

i just want to add something.

im glad that this dip worked out but as i said before when clams get into an advances gape as this one was they never recover(except once :)) if your clams are having problems don't wait to ask questions. waiting for a clam to get this far is too late. also FWD's are very stressful on clams, that's another reason im very surprised this clam pulled through. FWD's are not a cure all and in a lot of cases will do more harm then good. so please ask question even if you think your clam looks a little funky and don't expect a FWD to fix everything.

I agree wholeheartedly mbbuna...mine went down hill in a very, very short time...a couple of days...due to combined factors. I was at the end of my rope. The clam still looks ok, but that is no guarantee...I could wake up tomorrow and it would be dead. It's not like I can really tell what is going on inside the clam...the mantle is still extended, but not as fully and the color is a little off since the dip. I don't know how else to explain it... I am just keeping my fingers crossed.

thats cool, and im very happy for you. i only add that because a few years ago when the pinched mantle thing was in its height, and doing FWD's was first suggested for it, it seemed that any time someone saw a clam not doing well they would say "do a dip". i just dont want that to happen again.

Well, despite looking good for more than a week, with nice mantle extension, I woke up this morning to find the clam shrunken like in the first picture. When I picked it, up the clam floated free from it's shell. I had to try...looks like the majority was right and there was no hope, but I had to try at least. Thanks...It just breaks my heart that such a beautiful clam died.
