I am new to saltwater fish tanks. I have a 40 gallon saltwater tank with the normal sump, two power heads, etc setup. The tank was purchased from a friend so the sand and live rock were no longer live when I bought it. Since then, I have built up a healthy population of live rock and the associated shrimp, zooplankton, and worm-like critters. I have 2 blue legged hermits, 1 red legged hermit, 2 astrea snails, 1 turbo snail, 1 blue yellow tail damsel, and 1 six line wrasse. I just added the six line wrasse yesterday using gentle as possible netting and the drip acclimation process. I removed the damsel prior to adding the six line and moved all of the rocks around to create new territories. I added the six line first, waited 30 minutes to an hour while the damsel was re-acclimating, and then added the damsel. The six line appears to love its new home and the two fish don't really care about each other. However, about 2 hours after adding the six line, I noticed a thick white tissue-like thing hanging from its underside. I observed the six line for a little while to check for signs of abuse from the damsel and there weren't any. There aren't any signs of marine velvet, ich, or any other discolorations. Both fish are acting fine. The six line was in a medication free quarantine for 3 weeks with 2 blue-green chromis under observation. I believe in waiting for signs of disease before treating unnecessarily. I never noticed any white stringy fecal matter in the quarantine tank. The chromis are fine and their fecal matter is brown like normal. All creatures in the big tank seem fine and are acting normal. I notice the six line does not like the pellet fish food so I fed him mysis shrimp every 3 or so days while in the quarantine tank in addition to the pellet food. This morning he acted interested in eating but he went up to the pellet food, swam away to the front glass without eating it, and stared out at me. The damsel ate the pellet food without any problems and so do the chromis in the quarantine tank. The guy at the fish store suggested feeding it plankton. I also read about soaking food in some form of garlic solution. What type of food do I soak in the garlic solution? Does anyone else have special food that their Six Line likes? Do you think my six line has an internal parasite? Or, do you think he's suffering from nutrition deficiency from hardly eating/only eating 2 pellets and a couple mysis shrimp per day? I know Six Line wrasses are shy eaters so often times the chromis eating rapidly at the top of the water would deter him from eating and he would pick at whatever fell. Also, if I move too much when trying to feed him, he will get scared and swim away.
