How large do toad stools get, I have a small one( 2") in a nano tank and want to see if I should move it to a larger aquarium.

Thanks,
Daniel

Ours, pictured in my avatar, is 7"+ across. They get bigger than that, but once it starts to get too large for you, you could always cut some frags from the edges. I've started doing that to even out the shape of ours a little.

this ones the 10" to 12" easy

I just got a green toadstool about 8-10 inches where in the tank should it be place, right now I have it a little over half way up. I ahave 250W DE 14k halides w/4 x 55 actinics.

I have never had one bu this was a nice one at a LFS here in town so i forked up the 100 for it!!!!!

I had one grow from 6in dia to well over 12in ni less than 6 months.
In the wild, they can get to be "as large as a Volkswagen" (Garf web site)

largest one i've ever seen in-person was about 30"+ in diameter (cap). it was probably 30" tall, 40~50 lbs. and waaaay cramped in its tank (90g?). probably should've been in a 240g+.

where's the sarco police? :P

How the heck do you frag something like that?
garden shears?

but i guess the fact that they didn't frag it, contributes to the reason why/how it got so big.

If it gets to large, cut the plate off and cut it up like a pizza. attach these frages to a rock and you have more to trade. the stem will grow a new head it a couple of weeks. use a little more iodine in the water when cutting, atleats 4 a few days after

is placement in a tank just per preference or do toadstools do better in lower placements?

It all depends in the coral. I had one that loved high, medium and low current that was happy all the time and would grow from ~8" to 12" in diameter every quarter. It yeilded around 40 frags every quarter that I would trade to LFSs for store credit.

Another wanted very little current and would be mad for a couple of weeks if you moved it. I got it as a frag in the fall of 1999 and when I donated it to GARF this spring, it was about 8" in diameter and it had never been fragged. However it did drop a couple of frags which went into the 60 gallon tank.

The last place we had reef club meetings at had a sarchophyton that covered 2/3 of the tank.

Thanks,

Scott

I have one that is 8" across and one that is about 5" across. Mine have not grown, am I doing something wrong. Do you add any special supplements or food

I have heard iodine and good lighting w/ good calcium level from a guy here who had one bigger than a beach ball.

He even said that he didn't add iodine until he would frag it, according to him water changes added all the iodine he needed???

I would love some advice on what makes these corals strive as well!!!!

Here's an my toadstool before I converted my tank to an SPS tank. It was about 2 feet across and growing out of the tank...

very nice, glaudds! are the two sarcos pictured the same species (daughter/mother)?

how long did you have the big one? and how much did it grow (what size was it when you first got it)?

any closeup pics?

and why didn't you frag it all up a little for all of us here? :P did you sell it as one big monster?

I believe it is. The smaller one sprouted out from nowhere and grew to that size.

I believe it took about 4 years to get to that size. If memory serves me right, it was around 6 inches in size when I first got it.

any closeup pics?
Here's the only one I have. If you look on the left side, you can see that part of it has been fragged.

Actually, it was fragged up into pieces last year. I still have the stem in a growout tank in the garage.
Here were some of the pieces...

One of the earlier frags went into a ten gallon nano in my son's room. I think it has outgrown its tank:D
