Skimmer choice

Hi, I am new to the hobby ( 5 month old ), we live by the east cost , we dive and acquired a 125 gallon tank 6 month ago. We set it all up with nothing but ocean water from our back yard, Local fish ,and your bottom cleaner, learned the ups and down, learned a great deal, learned the hard way and waisted some beautiful fish due to some newbie mistake . Currently nothing in the tank but all the cleaning crew.


My 125 gal is using the Eheim canister filter but i decided its time to build a true sump and skimmer. So i figured to come here and learn , ask questions about the skimmer in mind.

The is instant ocean skimmer in sump 150 gallon that some one selling locally brand new for $50, i was going to place it inside a 40 gal sump, i been ready about the Skimmer and not sure if its a good or not. The other pumps range from $150 - several hundreds .

Bubble Magus makes some good skimmers for a decent price. Reef Octopus is another reputable brand that won't break the bank. I'm currently using an Aquamaxx cone-s skimmer and really like it.

Papaifresco all I can say is do your homework before you buy. We can all make suggestions cause there are a lot of skimmers out there. Personally I'm not going to suggest a certain skimmer but say to make sure that it is rated for your tank size or somewhat larger tank. Second make sure you get the best one you can afford and not just buy one because it's cheap. This hobby can be expensive and not to mention it can break your spirits when things go wrong so always try to buy the best equipment you can afford so you're not replacing it soon after. This means even if you have to wait and save up a bit before doing so. Use that time to research. Been at this for about 15 years or more and everytime I buy or consider buying something new I'm always doing a ton of research. I learned the hard way as I'm sure many others did by buying the first thing that came along in the beginning only to be replacing it within a few months or so because I didn't do my homework.
