skimmer help

Ok, i see tons of pictures of everyones skimmer. They have this black nasty sludge in them,my skimmer however creates mostly green tinted water. Am i skimming to wet? Its on a 65 with a 20L sump. I have a pair if clowns, tiny hippo, fox face and a diamond goby. My skimmer is a asm mini g. Im beginning. To wonder. If i dont have it setup right

Sound as it might be set wet, try closing the valve a 1/4 turn.

What type of food do you feed? It could be the food it could be water born algae that its pulling out. For dry skimmate you want the foam to start at the bottom of the neck of the collection cup and build the head from there.

I feed a bunch of different foods, green flakes, pellets, and frozen mysis and brine.

Yeah it sounds like you are, is the cup filling up pretty fast? Also he prepared for the tang police

There's nothing wrong with running a wet skim that produces a green or brown skimmate vs the sludge that some folks prefer - you're just going to have to empty the collection cup more frequently. I personally like to try to adjust the skimmer so that it's producing a dark brown, coffee like skimmate. When it's too dry I think it's harder to clean and isn't pulling as much out of the water as it does with a wetter skim.

Being new myself, I have seen my LFS selling teensy weensy hippo's (I think) that are silver dollar sized. Would it be wrong to keep one of those for 6 mo's plus while it was small enough and then return it to the LFS for credit? I'm new so please don't let the tang police take me away... (Idon't have one)

My hippo is about the size of a dime. I know it's not supposed to be in there, I am going to move him out, I tried to get it back to the Lfs, a day later and said they can only give me 1/3 credit I paid! Soon keeping it till it gets better. Besides they are a captive breed and should do fine in there

My skimmer fills up pretty fast, maybe a 1/4 of the cup every 2 days
