skimmer overkill

is there a problem with having a 300gallon skimmer on a 150tank with 75sump, great price and great skimmer just want to make sure that bigger is better backfires on me. its a swc 300. its rated at 350 gallon heavy bioload?

Maybe. I had a large... I mean LARGE skimmer on my 45g once... I think it was rated for 180g... the problem that I experienced was that it didn't skim very well because the neck of the skimmer always got crudded up first. I read about this being an issue on oversized skimmers. However, a "rated" 300g or 350g skimmer on a 225g system isn't too bad at all. In fact, it may actually match up. Most skimmers are fairly overrated.

well the 350 rated was on the heavy bio load, more like 400-500gallon rated system but as you said most skimmers rates are off, but want to make sure that it does a good job as there dozens of skimmers for sale and want to make sure im not making a mistake.

I'm sure that skimmer would work great for you. If not, that's when you sell it and buy another one. Its definitely part of the hobby! And part of the fun, too, IMO.

I have one rated for 1000 gal. on my 110. Is that overkill? Actually my tank looks like crap now due to not taking care of it like I should for months. I am trying to get it back in good shape and I think the over sized skimmer helps.

I don't see an issue with it. Mine is rated at 300 for my 180 and I want to expand it
