Skimmer problem

Just wondering if anyone has used the hydor slim skim?
I'm running a nano tank with the slim skim. But it is not doing a very good job with my nitrates still very high and little skimmate production
Am I'm putting it in wrong?
Should I purchase another?

How long has it been running? There is a short break in period where the skimmer doesn't produce much at all.

I've had my skimmer up and running (not a slim skim though) for probably close to a month. It's just now starting to give me the really dark skimmate. For a while it was really wet and almost clear Not sure what changed as I didn't touch it. I'd say just wait it out.
