Skimming

I have been reading threads where people have FOWLR set-ups and do not use a protein skimmer. The one common is that they all use a fuge/sump set up. Will not using a skimmer hurt me?

I just put a skimmer in my tank after 5 years. You do not need one to make it work. I still don't have a skimmer in the other tank.

While it's up for debate wether you really need one or not it does help some. A Skimmer will help remove the dissolved solids in the water helping to keep your water quality better. If you don't use one you will defiantly want to keep an eye on your water readings as well as stick to a regular water change schedule.

I ran a biocube without one for about 8 months. but i did water changes weekly and did notice a change in the water color and quality when i changed out the water.

If you can fit it in your budget I would get one.
