can it be used without any adverse affects? the main reason I want it is because its flat and usually long. Anyone have any comments on it?

My friend has a big piece of slate on the bottome of his tank to keep the sand seperated from the back of the tank. Its been in there for 5yrs or more i guess, with no ill affects.

I started to use slate as the bottom of my aquarium, but the pieces I had seemed to have a lot of red and orange in them. After looking up some info about slate, I found that there is a potential for iron in the slate that could rust, so I ended up going with marble...

Slate sounds like a flat piece of rock to me. Something I would use in a African cichlid tank. Not sure how they are made up though. Some rocks can have an adverse reaction to saltwater.

I know all the slate I have around my house (I live on ledge, I have a lot) does contain iron and it will rust. The siding on the back side of my house is stained orange from water splashing off the crushed slate.

allright, slate is out of the question. bj mentioned marble... thats kinda heavy though. ANyone have any ideas for something that is flat and kinda long instead?

thanks all

Couldn't you use a flat piece of acrylic and disguise it with other rocks.

The slate, especially generic slate around the house, sounds risky.
