Yesterday I finally made a trip up to see Jerry at Slippery Rock Corals

I always see his listings on craigslist and wanted to see how it was

His prices and selection destroy any other the petstores in our area

I live down in Washington County so it was like a hour and a half ride but it was worth it.

If i had a better camera i could take some pics of what i got but i went looking for some colorful zoas and i got a bunch of them plus a really nice purple/green elegance coral, a torch, a green slimer, neon green favia, and a blue favia

I paid way less then $1 a polyp for all the zoas i got (la lakers, gb packers, tubb blues, blue/grey zoas, some red ones) and the other corals where like $20-$30 each

If any of you guys have seen his listings on craigslist its worth the drive

I asked him for a price on a flame angel and he told me $25.

That is crazy

There is a guy in Indiana Pa that also has alot of frags. Too bad you couldn't have hit him also since you drove up this way.

yeah, who's that? I've given up on my lfs for good zoa frags and Indiana isn't too far

That is why I went up to slipperyrock. I wanted some blue zoas and I got 3 different blue zoas and then 4-5 other ones. He told me he would frag anything and he had this badass frag saw. He sent me pictures of some of what he had. They looked better in real life

I got la lakers and gb packers which i always wanted plus some crazy grey ones with long eyelashes and some nice random red/orange ones too

If these grow good I hope to be able to frag some off to trade for other corals

i never wanted zoas before but now i think they look awesome when they cover the rocks on the lower half of my tank

$1/polyp for those zoas is pretty standard. They are pretty common. Glad you had a good experience though.

Is that Bigfoot on reef central. Oh it's That guy named Jarod who has not been heard from in years. You coming back to the hobby

Where locally can I get colorful zoas for $1 a polyp?

I'm still looking for more and would gladly pay that for ones I don't have

I never see cheap zoas locally except for eagle eyes or brown bland ones

I'd love some bright red or yellow zoas for $1 locally

Thanks

You need to find out when stores get shipments in. All the stores in area get decent zoas in. I am a hard coral guy so never was looking for them but saw them all the time. Aqua world used to always have some nice ones in 5 buck tanks. Davesaquastock had a bunch of huge zoa colonies for like 15-25 I think. He did have a really big pink zoa colony last time I was there. Seahorse used to have some but haven't been there in 6 months or so.

Ive got some of the $5 frags from aquaworld but its always hit or miss from them

I just shot Dave an email to see if he has anything in stock

I usually go to both of these when I am up that way

The guy in Indiana, Pa is Brettnleslie on here. There is another guy just outside kittanning called bigdog on here that also sells frags. Both of these people are in an Indiana, Pa reef club so they may know other people in that area with frags

I wouldn't bother with Aquaworld- Ya you might get a nice looking frag for 5$ but you also get hair or bubble algae nightmares with them as well. I even took a while before aclimating in QT to pick off any algae I could find but despite my efforts they infected my tank with bubble and hair algae- granted it didn't last long but I am a perfectionist when it comes to that stuff so even a hint of it drives me crazy.

Mark,

Just bought a tank last weekend actually. I am starting the process of setting it up... should have something running in a few weeks.

I was excited to get back into the hobby, but I forgot how much work it is to setup a new tank.

Thats great!!!!! Let me know, I will be happy to give you some frags. You just have to come here if you want free!!!!

The same holds true for any store or individual you get coral from. All of our tanks have algea spores of all kinds in them. Given the proper environment, they will thrive. Most of these stores source their corals from the same wholesalers who have their own algae issues.

I have visited AquaWorld numerous times over the last year and have yet to see an aglae problem. In fact, the coral tanks have looked extremely well taken care of. There is no more algae in the $5 frag tank (or other corals tanks) at AquaWorld than there is at any other store I have visited in the last 5 years, including our stores in the Pittsburgh Area and those in Ohio.

+1

I have done the buy 5 get 1 free from the $5 frags 2 or 3 times at Aquaworld and i never had any algae outbreaks after the fact. I did dip then prior to placing them in my DT. The frag tank is hit or miss but for $5 what can you expect.

Does any other pet stores in the area have $5 frags? I know a while ago elmers had some $10 frags but i havnt been there in a while.

Thanks, I'll send him a message and see what he has.
