That's an escape response. Some species of nerites are even more prone to that behavior.

Yes, it's a Nassarius. I meant that even though Nassarius will sometimes "jump" off rocks or the glass, some other snails do it even more often. Nerita polita, N. argus, N. incerta and others will do the same thing, except that if you have 100 of them on the glass, they will all startle at the same time and all jump at once

This seems to be a common behavior for the "giant Tongan" Nassarius snails. Mine do it sometimes when I feed. I wonder if they are subtidal so they freak out when they touch air?
