Hey,
So right now I'm in florida, and I'm collecting some inverts but need an ID, on my snails. and if they're reef safe. I've tried looking around but have had no luck. Well here are the pics.

Theres a snails that moved in on others pictures. But ID's on any of them would be great.

The last two and maybe the first picture looks to be cerith snails, which are reef safe algae eaters.

The two middle pictures look like some sort of conch to me but I'm not positive. Maybe some one else can chime in here.

Yeah, I though tthe bottom ones were ceriths, i was thinking the middle may be some nas. or conch. the top i think could be a whelk, but i don't think i have any collected right now so its not a big deal.
Thanks for the input!

The snails in the first, fourth, and fifth photos are ceriths (two different species). They are algae eaters and should be fine in your tank. The others are Melongena corona, which are predatory snails related to the whelks. They will eat other snails, so if you plan on keeping them, you'll want to keep them in their own tank and catch snails for them to eat, unless you don't mind them eating the snails that are already in your main tank.

Cheers,

Don

Yeah, i quickly found out they were eating snails. I quarintined them. Is there a possibiilty that the "ceriths" could be Batillaria attramentaria or japanese false ceriths?
Thanks alot,
Sean

Nope, not if they're from Florida. But, there's a good chance they are Batillaria minima. I can't tell much about the first cerith, but the others are great matches for what Colin Redfern calls Batillaria minima in his book, Bahamian Seashells. Guido Poppe agrees, and identifies your species as B. minima. But, the Jacksonville Shell Club have identified a very different-looking cerith as that species, and they are usually correct. It could be that the species is that variable, or it may be a totally different species.
