I recently added 5 turbo snails to a 60 gal system. Prior to that I had only had two margurita snail. I started to get an early outbreak of hair algea along with a lot of the brown algea that grows in the high flow areas. Not sure whats its called. The algea is no surprise to me since I feed my tank a little heavy. In any case I added 5 mexican turbos to the tank. I have been really pleased with them. They mow through the algea like lawn mowers. I hear that they dont always last long in a tank for whatever reason but so far I love these little guys.
So my question is that I have noticed a pretty good spike in my nitrites. Could this be caused by all the snail poop being added to my tank or should I look to another cause? If it is possible it occurs to me that maybe the tank is better off with some algea than the nitrites. Any thoughts??
