Last saturday I visited the Cerro Gordo beach just 30 minutes form San Juan. Not the best snorkling place in the island but was a lot of fun with our local aquarium club members.

I dont have an underwater camera so I purchased an underwater housing for my old Canon P&S. It did the job very well.

Some views of the beach, beautiful day!!

The reef is about 400' from the shore at the red buoy.

You're lucky to have great places like this so close! Do people SCUBA dive in the deeper areas of this reef, or is it generally just a snorkeling area?

There are more people scuba diving in the reef than snorkling. If you look at the second photo you will see a group of divers just preparing to get in the reef.

Yes we are very lucky. Puerto Rico is a nice place to live if you like the sea and are willing to learn some spanish.

I snorkled there about 20 years ago - it actually looks in better shape than it did back then. I don't recall the swim area floats, but I do recall having to dodge some jet skis. This is some interesting habitat in some really shallow areas between the little island and the main area in your first picture. At first the area just looks like piles of live rock, but underneath that is a whole community of critters....of course you can only go there at slack tide.
