So, How much light can these Acans handle??

Well, I am a SPS nut, and my tank is dedicated to such. But as one woudl expect, with these Aussie Acans flooding the market, I saw a couple in the LFS that I took a liking to.

My concern is how much light can they handle.

My current tank is only 12" deep, 2-250W radiums on an HQI ballast in lumenarcs.(so, around 330 watts a piece) sitting about 12" off the water. It is bright.

Now certainly I will put the Acans on the bottom, but in a 12" deep tank, the bottom aint to far from the top.

So, again, how much likght can they take?, either right off, or after being acclimated. In the LFS they are in a 12" deep frag tank, under 250w DE, about 18" off the water.

Thanks for your thoughts on this.

I have all my acan lords in a 33 breeder, 12 inches deep, directly under sunpod mh 150 x 2 and they are doing fine.

I have quite a few acan frags in a 20 long grow out tank with 250watt xm 20k about 15" off the water and all is well. I start them off to the side and move them closer to the middle over time. After the have healed and grown a bit the go under 400 watters and i like the color better with brighter light. I had to move a few into a smaller tank during a move and i did not like the color change after they were acclimated to brighter light. I have seen both opinions on posts but i am happier with more light. Hope that helps.

Thank you for the info. It seems that after acclimation that they will adapt to bright lights, and possible show very nice colors under bright light.

Any other comments?

Thanks!

i find that the aussie acan can pretty much handle alot of light it just might change color if under different or higher light.
