So much for getting my feet wet...

I started out with a 29 gallon biocube for salt water....saved it from a buddy of mine that was using tap water and not monitoring his tank....Well i came across another sweet deal, but it's another savior event.
A 90 gallon setup (same situation), the only thing that is surviving is a chocolate starfish. The setup has a 250 watt halide light with built in fan, hob protein skimmer (brand unknown, pick the tank up monday). T-5 lights and alot of live rocks, all for $300
The tank is infested with red velvet slime and hair algae. My question is.... I have another 90 gallon tank, should I just transfer the live rock and substate into the clean tank and let it cycle thru or keep everything together and get a bunch of cleaner crew and low light for awhile to recover the tank ?
thxs for any input.....so excited about the larger setup :)

i would nuke the rock, start from scratch. you have no idea what kind of "stuff" you could be getting from the old tank. youve already listed a few things that are a pain to control as it is. i would just take the extra time, nuke the rock back to dead rock, restart the cycle in the new tank and go from there.

+1 for sure

lol....for years I have always wanted to do saltwater.
But it was the initial cost of getting the equipment...but with the biocube it was relatively simple. But now I have more time on my hands and speaking with you all for help
My wife was never much interested in my freshwater tanks...but now shes talking about bring'n a large tank to build into the wall between our kitchen / living room :wavehand:

Throw out sand, all rock and rebuild from scratch. You don't know how that rock has been treated and what pests exist. Control the variables. You can always bleach and vinegar the rock for a future use but it is a few week process.

Well I took everyones advice...threw out the substrate(wanted black anyways) and scrub down the LR and started bleaching it today

will it hurt to sit in the bleach solution for a couple of days....I work till monday?
Now i have an empty 90 gallon sitting in my office waiting...lol
:hmm2:
