So what would you do?

Hello all,

I purchased a ruby sump about 6 months ago and threw my ceramic cylinders into the 'refugium' section.

Should I ditch these ceramic cylinders and go for a traditional fuge? I've never had a fuge so I'd love to insight if that's what you'd use it for.

What should would you do? :bounce2:

I'm not usually a fan of removing established bio filters from a setup.

Hopefully someone will give a better answer to this, but maybe establish the refugium on top the cylinders and get the benefit of both? I'm not 100% on this.

I'm with BrickFishHouse on not removing established bio media, but if you do, I definitely wouldn't remove them all at once. At the very least just move them to a different section of the sump if you're able.

I've got a display fuge that I just recently setup. It looks good, has a lot of different macro algae, and houses some creatures I can't have in my display, like seahorses. Might be something to consider if you're able to do it rather than removing the cylinders.

To be of any real use for filtration, a fuge needs to be between 20-30% of the display. Much more than most people can accommodate. If you do get rid of the media, take out a few (2-3) cylinders every week or two. The slower the better. Do you have a decent amount of live rock?

I want to do this at some point, but I'm in an apartment and don't have much room.

I've got a good amount of live rock. I don't necessarily want or need to take the cylinders out, I was just wondering if a real refugium would be better off in there instead of the cylinders or something else.
