Been doing allot of research on this fish and would like to know your personal experience. Min tank size, prone to disease, and fish compatibility.

Thanks,

I would say this is not a fish for most hobbyists and too many end up in the trade. I would say a tank of at least 8 foot in length but bigger would be better. As far as surgeon fish go, the sohal is pretty sturdy and hardy. The downfall of this fish is that it's aggressiveness is really hard to exaggerate and this makes it difficult to mix them with other fish.

Sohal temperament is sometimes exaggerated. Remember every fish is different. I have seen many Sohals in various setups live happily and safely with other fish/ and even other tangs.

My current 250 gallon setup is housing:

Sohal tang 9 inches
Purple tang 5 inches
blue hippo tang 7 inches
tomino tang 4 inches
yellow tang 5 inches

Once in awhile the tangs will scuffle, but nothing more than a tail whack to keep each other in check. The Sohal is the boss of the pack, but he is no monster, others make him to be. Go ahead and experiment. Sohal is by far my favorite tang. He comes right up to the top to eat nori out of my hand.

I have these in a 180 in order I added.

Hippo 3 1/2-4"
Yellow 4 1/2"
Purple 4 1/2"
Sohal 3 1/2"

The Hippo, Yellow and Purple have been together awhile. The Sohal is fairly new(1 month) The Sohal is a little aggressive but no problems as of yet.
I have been warned however. So far so good but as I understand I that coud change when they get older. I did try to smaller with the Sohal. That helps.

Just wait. 9 inches is still a pretty small size for these. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lc14obsuHaM&feature=related

Amen to this. I removed one from a 350 gallon which was way too small.

Mine is fat and happy and GROWING....I fear the future because I love it and the other tangs, but he doesn't fear me at all now and when the seaweed sheets are in the water he spirals all around it to eat and only after he's done can the rest of the fish enjoy.

When he's ready for another bite, replay of the above.

I'd say he was about 3.5" when I got him 4-5 months ago and he's now abut 6" same size as my blonde naso.

Bottom right of the tank.
