here is a stupid reply - what do you think about the clown tang ? I feel like they are similar and a little less aggressive.
Clown tangs are great, if they live.
Clown tangs are stupid aggressive also, I wouldn't consider one in less than 180 gallons with some open swimming room, larger is better. If I can get some through QT I will put one in my 315 as a last fish. Sohal's are intermittent, their distribution is mostly red sea which has been shut down for a year or longer. They can be found along the west coast of Africa pretty far south, so they will show up sometimes from other collection sites.
An adult clown tang is truly striking. A male Sohal might be the king of the sea as far as appearance goes. These guys get big, and if in a small tank they will kill fish, they might kill fish in a large tank. It isn't just picking on a fish, they will slice another fish in half.

^ I'll agree with the above post. Sohal's can and will be aggressive at some point. Select few are more tame. I remember Rod, from Rod's reef having a sohal that was every bit of 16 inches or so... He literally had it in a 250gallon or so rubbermaid tub. That would come to the surface and always wanted to be pet.. It was hilarious. Clown tangs have the same temperament as far as I am concerned. Just a lower success rate.

Every Clown Tang I've ever seen is amazingly aggressive. I wouldn't touch one with a 10 foot pole. A 180 is a gross underestimate of how much room they need. I watched one in a 2000 gallon tank, he was 4-5". He stayed in one part of the tank, completely stressed out, the larger fish in the tank stayed away from him and his cave. Clown Tangs are one of the two species I think should never leave the ocean.

hmm, I personally believe that they are less aggressive than a shohal. Luckily I've had good luck with my clown tang. It is the smallest off all my tangs so it doesn't bother anyone. The purple is still the king. I like the fact that they are always busy. I personally feel that they look better than the sohal and are a lot cheaper. They are not the hardiest of the bunch though. I went through 2 before I got one that accepted food.

I search and search and searched for a small Sohal and randomly found one at Chicago Fish and Coral. He is in a 120 with a lot of other tangs and shows no aggression. When I was at Old Orchard Pets they had two Sohals.

Changed my mind... That is the rudest place I have ever talked to... I stated I have a 2 1/2 hour one way drive. I asked if he could send a picture or tell me a price (after asking general information about the fish). Man replied - Can't send pictures, or release pricing over the phone?!? That is absurd. I asked again, and again, then got someone else on the phone. Told me they have a 6" SHOW SOHAL for $600.
Is this place for real? No wonder I've never heard of them.... Attitudes like that and prices like that, make me share my thoughts quickly. I go to a lot of stores. Know a lot of store owners on first name basis.... The way I was just treated by whoever I spoke with was unbelievable. I will never. Ever. Go to this store.

Yea, this was my review of them:
I'm very surprised at some of the other reviews that have indicated the staff is knowledgeable. My experience was exactly the opposite. Not a single person in the store was familiar with a common and dangerous marine Algae species. The prices are some of the highest I have ever seen. Every time I've spent money there I've come to regret. There are other reviews on Chicago area reef sites which state the same opinions. I can't speak for their fresh water facilities.

Honest businesses such as Reef Plus, Aqua Pros, to name a couple... These guys know what it takes. Reasonable prices, friendly, and knowledge staff will get me into the store again and again. Will also make me talk well about them to others. Which in turn, brings them MORE customers... It's sad. There isn't too many stores in our hobby. I'm happy with the couple that I go to locally.

The Sohal's name was Flash... awesome fish!!! You could make a tunnel for him with your hand against the side of the tub and he would swim through it!Oh he definitely had a Sohal. I promise you.

Glad someone remembers besides me...
EDIT: It is Rod's Sohal, that has had me wanting a sohal for the past 10+ years... Just never had a decent sized tank until now... And of course now, it is hard for me to find one because of the Red Sea issues currently.
