solaris style leds.

Pardon my ignorance if this has been covered on the main boards.... but i won't pay $24 to use a search engine:)

so, PFO mentioned that on solaris they used led's from Luxeon, a large company from california.

What I am curious is if we are able to get a large quantity in bulk form the company [to lower the prices] if we could find the exact 2 led's that they used... and build our own hoods either as a club or by individuals] The leds suposidly are bright, and last a long time... and have been picked up by the industrial side of the market [non aquarium industry]

any links to threads or articles on this stuff or anyone else wanting to dig in?

possibly down under $2-3 a led. the solaris uses 36 per opening. if we cram mor ein to get more light, and are able to find what we need..... we might hit gold.

I don't need the color change.

On going technical arguement going in the SPS forum over Dana Riddle PAR testing of the Solaris.

From the sounds of it there where some "faults" in the test and the Solaris doesn't seem SPS worthy PAR wise to me.

I am a DIY guy and soldering leds into an array wouldn't be that hard. Heck the dimming for leds wouldn't even be that hard. It is just at this point it isn't very clear how effective they would be at growing corals.

hmm, I read that they tested descently... at least 75% of a 250 halide.. well, early tests are early tests. I am still curious about trying them, if they would work...

not worth $2000 for me, but If i could diy it for $50, it could at least privde soem bluespectrum....

PFO claimed it could be as powerful as a 250w MH. Well they tested agianst a 250W 20K SE XM with a unneeded shield that dropped the PAR another 20%.

The LEDs in a simple hood would make a really wicked light for a small tank or a nano.
