Some Ideas For My 180 ?

Tank Predator

New member
ok so i have this 180 (oceanic reef ready with 40 gallon sump ect......)
the tank used to house a reef but then turned to fresh for a bit and set up my 90 for reef

at the moment i have africans in there and i have been really thinking of doing salt water fish only however im kinda stumped on ideas and thought maybe you all could give me some if it is not much to ask

much thanks

How many Africans can you fit in a 180g fish tank?

Anyway, assuming you are into Ciclids, do you want to do a predatory saltwater tank? If so, I'd get a Lionfish, Triggerfish, and definately some sort of colored Frogfish. Those are pretty bad, especially the Angler ones. I don't have too much experience with them so maybe someone else can chime in.

Good luck!

i have about 38 Africans in there once i figure out what im going to get im going to start selling them off

as for predatory tank what i had in mind an this is just ideas nothing set in stone i was looking at some sorta lion maybe an eel or grouper
thats y im kinda asking for ideas

How about:
Volitan Lion
Eel(zebra, snowflake, etc.)
Angel(Emperor, Cortez, Queen)
Puffer(dogface, porcupine)
and a Tang(naso, yellow, or sohal?)?

Yeah! Another DE member with a big fowlr! I would suggest angels, triggers, puffers etc. They move around more and interact more. Eels, groupers and lions just hide until food comes out, kind of boring, but you could have it be an aggressive reef, just no inverts, unless you went with the angels, triggers and puffers.

I have a 180, I have a dogface puffer, lunar wrasse, sailfin tang, tomato clown, a coral beauty and a flame angel, (don't do as I do) I'm going to get a H tusk. and an emporer to finish things out. They are pretty dang fun to watch.

I'd get a Lionfish, Triggerfish, and definately some sort of colored Frogfish.

These three are really not a good combination. Not even any two of them.

This is from someone who is willingly keeping 2 mantis tanks...
I'm just kidding, This is a very good point, triggers don't get along with lions, none of these fish get along with eachother.

I have all three of these predators (and mantis shrimp)... just not in the same tank together!

true, triggers don't get along with lions. but also, frogfish and lions will eat each other (whoever is bigger will go for it - if they are evenly matched, the frog will probably try to eat the lion). Also, triggers are likely to pick at a frog (think soft chew toy) and will almost certainly outcompete it for food.

you could probably keep a lion with some of the mellower triggers like a blue throat. for most, though, it could be risky and is generally not recommended.

BTW, stdreb27, I like your tank list for your 180. HTs and imperators are among my favorites.

They are nice and active, with plenty of room, and always entertaining. Beautiful, colorful, I love my fish.

In the past I have kept a Niger Trigger with a Volitan Lion. The trigger was less than half the lion's size, not sure if that made a difference or not. And why don't either of them get along with Frogfish? I have not kept any, but have seen Frogfish kept with various fish in reef systems at many'o'LFSs. All the Frogs do is just sit there, and breathe occasionally.

What happened?

The size is probably what made your two work together, and niger triggers are a mellower trigger. It is kind of a case of maybe maybe not.

I think the more aggressive triggers, especially as they approach adulthood, would be a risk with lions. Nigers can be mellow (mine is) but I don't know how predictable they are as a group, especially when they get big.

There is a great chapter on frogfish in Reef Fishes volume 1 (by Scott Michael). It has a good section on suitable tankmates (not many) and those to avoid.

I have never in my life seen a Frogfish move, ever. Even after looking at one for almost an hour... no movement. It's mouth opened once I think, as if taking a gasp of air.

Those are pretty cool looking fish, I really want to read up on 'em. Thanks LisaD!

My frogfish propels itself around the tank. Level of activity can depend a lot on the species. Mine is a wartskin, and I think they are rather active for a frog. Their gill openings are holes in their "armpits" and they jet water to move "fast". Normally they crawl using their fins like feet. So they do move. Some are more active than others, and some lure more actively than others. After more than two years, I finally got mine to take frozen food from a feeding stick (bamboo shis kabob skewer, in my case). When he sees the food, he moves. When they eat, they move REALLY fast, even if it's only the mouth that is moving. :)

BTW, a 20 long reef is a perfect habitat for some of the smaller frogfish (like wartskins) at least for a while. (As long as you don't stock it with other small fish or shrimp.)
