Some junk algea

Hey all

I started up a new tank and some junk brown hair ( maybe ? ) algae came in on some of the new live rock. Tanks is about 2 months old.

What eats this junk ? How do I get rid of it ? Water quality is good - although there may have been some phosphates and or silicates in the water I used to set up the aquarium - I used tap water ( I know I know ) to set it up, I recently bought and set up an ro/di unit and have done 3 15 gallon water changes since then and of course all make up water is ro/di now.

What do y'all think ?

looking back at it I think the water changes and ro have helped. Better , maybe, but def not gone.

Based on the first pic (looking on my phone so hard to tell) it could be hair algae or Bryopsis. Any chance you can get a close up? If feathery looking it’s likely Bryopsis.

Hey all - so I found a spot in the tank where the algae has grown a little longer and it definitely has that feather look that you're talking about. So what is the usual approach to getting rid of bryopsis ?

Nothing generally eats Bryopsis. I’ve had good luck with Fluconazole (reef flux) treating it. I know @griss has had success with it too

Yep, Fluconazole will eliminate both Bryopsis and hair algae.

Fluconazole is safe for inverts and corals is what I'm reading - have either of you had any I'll effects from using it ? Even subtle effects ?

It melted some orange bambam zoanthids for me but everything else including other zoas was fine. It definitely was the fluconazole because I did 2 treatments a few months apart. Whatever zoas survived the first treatment got nuked the second time.

I had one Acro get burned but I think a chunk wasn’t dissolved and landed on it. Otherwise no ill effects.

No ill effects for me at all. Acros, F. Ricordea, Zoas, Gorgs, etc and no issues.

So not to need an excessive amount of hand holding here - but how much fluconazole do I buy for one treatment ? Im not finding any info online thats making me feel confident im buying enough. I have a 90 gallon - between sump and rocks and main tank it's probably between 90-100 gallons of water.

It’s a one time dose. So at 100 gallons, you would need 2000 mg. The first few days there will generally be minimal notice of a change. Around day 4/5 you should start to notice some white tips forming. By day 14 it should be mostly if not all the way gone.

That’s the stuff I used. One thing I noticed in mine, though I didn’t weigh it, was the bottle was about half empty (still had plenty and I believe it was accurate as it appears I’d have 2-2.5 more doses). But that seems to be a common theme in the reviews.
