How was that pic taken at night with a flash? They look sweet!

Jill has sun polyps and direct feeds them at night when open.

Nice Dave....They are great when fully expanded....I didn't realize they can get sooooooo big! :D

I've been "training" mine to open in the evening about an hour after my actinics come on. When I first got them, I started to feed them at that time giving them a squirt or two even though they were mostly closed up. They would immediately start to open....so I'd give em some more.....man, they can eat...and some plump up to about 1.5 inch long and 1/2-3/4 wide (similar to Dave's from what I can tell in the pic)! :eek2:

After doing this for some time now, they are automatically opening on their own at this time without feeding....but I feed them any way. Love these guys.

mine automatically open when the antintics come on as well, been debating on gettin rid of them though, hate to feed each polyp nightly... (kinda annoying to me) like my 2 anemones and 2 other tanks arnt enough (I dunno how Linda does it sometimes) :)

thank you all.
First off all yes ta they do eat a lot. and again you do have to sort of train them at first to open. my trick is i place mine under a overhang. the area is greatly shaded during the day. in any case this helps as when they are in direct lighting they tend to shy from opening up and target feeding is neccessary. in any case when i got the coral i target fed during the day (over hang is wqell shaded) and encourage it to open. after a few days the coral began to respond and open when i would just feed the fish mysis. i like to feed the coral frozeen cyclopeeze. once i feed my fish it begins to open. i then blow some cyclopeeze over it with a ridged tubing. after that it opens full bloom. this is when i just dump in coral food in the current. they love being in good current as it brings food to them. i have been emailing a fellow hobbiest from this site in another area of the country. he has a beautiful non photosythesis coral tank. lots of carnations, corals, and other stuff. he never spot feeds his sun corals. he trained them to open when food hit the water column and he dosed phyto max and zoomax daily!. i do use both products but not as much as he does. i does every few days alternating between the two. i think the key is getting them i a bit of shade so they react to filter food like its dusk or dawn. heres some more beautiful pictures.
the pictures were taken during midday lights on, the first picture is with flash , macro settings. i have some with no flashes. here ya go

thats what i do to. they open up when i feed anything else in my tank now and at this time ...id say...three times a week i blast them when they get fully open. BTW beware of shrimp as they make spot feeding a pain as they begin to learn that its easy pick'ins. use something lke a bottle top cut to cover it or like me...i stand watch and chase them off with the tubing i use to feed. seriously i literally bang them away! LOL they get the picture after a few hits!:D

now here you can see the difference ....taken with flash on! picture is much crisper but color changes with flash.....not sure which is more flattering for the subject but the details in these pic's are incredable!

oh yeah i almost forgot...this picture quality isnt so hot but it shows the coral when polyps are closed. with the sun coral this is how it spends most of its time this is why its so pleasing and a fun event to watch them bloom open.
