sorry guys I´m changing from t5 to MH

Yes, after 3 years of having T5s, I´ve decided to change to HQI.
I have 6x 80 watt t5s with independent parabolic reflectors and ICECAP ballasts.

My decision is due to the fact that coloration is not that great under T5.

I bought a collection of the most colorful and exotic corals and while acros remained as colorful as under MH everything else: zoos, and montis lost coloration and became pastel like in color, the superman monti from atlantis looks pastel, and the zoos remain small not opening much and with duller colors.
Grow is also slow.

I found out a few months back that my JBL alkalinity test was bad, and my alkalinity was low: 5.5 dkh, bought a new test and increased alkalinity to 10dkh, calcium was 450 mg/l, salinity was right, nitrates were 0, phosphates 0 etc.

And things started to color up again once the alkalinity issue was solved. But even though they colored up, they remained pastel like. The sunset monti was brown and pale.

I decided to change when I gave a frag of superman monti and the pale original sunset monti to a friend. They both had dull colors. But when I visited his tank, the superman had grown a lot and the colors were intense metallic and fluorescent, the growth on the superman was amazing, it trippled its size in 2 months, and the sunset that I gave him one week ago was already having the polyps more extended and yellow, and the body had began to turn orange.

All of his zoos looked very big, very open, and very colorful, I had some zoos that were the same and in my tank remain not very open, small and lack color.

He´s using one of those cheap oddyssea lamps, with the cheap bulbs it includes, and was adding the same seachem additives I had to my tank and had the same parameters.

That was the sign that I had to change, I´m buying a 72" oddyssea lamp, since its cheap and even if the ballast fail, replacing them is still cheaper than buying a luxury unit from the beggining.

Yeah, I have refractometers, brand new test kits, all parameters have been stable for 2 months and I just know the coloration will never be intense metallic and colorful like under MH.

Also the zoas issue, I´ve seen it in other T5 tanks as well.

lol if only you were closer and had a 48" fixture, I'd trade just to see the difference. I think I'd get better coloration, since I'm looking for the pastel look, and I want to try T5s now, but I can't afford to be indecisive about this since I can't afford 2 lighting fixtures at the same time.

Good luck on your quest! Be sure to try the new 250w Helios 20k DE bulbs. My friend runs them on his 75 and the tank looks OUT OF THIS WORLD! Nicer than my 250w 20k SE Radiums :(

I have to say I have had one of those "cheap" Odyssea MH with acintic combo's for the last 6 months and all my corals are growing great. Also I haven't had any problems with the fixture (maybe I'm lucky). The tank is 30" deep and I have a mixture of LPS, SPS, Paly's, Zoa's, Ricordea's and Monti's. Post some before and after pics as a reference.. : )

I don´t know about the ballasts, people say that when you have cheap ballasts the light looks more yellow, is that your case tipmoff?.

I´m thinking that even if this is true with the oddyssea, upgrading from 15000k to 20000k would solve the issue. And even if the ballast fails, buying new ballasts is still cheaper than buying a luxury unit.

I also thought on going DIY but it is still cheaper to buy the oddyssea and the assambling and cooling of the unit is really good plus it has moonlights.

Could it just be the combination of bulbs being used? I added some figi purple and it totally changed the coloratin of my corals..some for the better, some not..

plancton...I would say that is probably true but to a minor extent. I was going to purchase a 20k myself to see what improvement there might be but everything is doing so well I figured I would leave well enough alone. The ballast was one of the main complaints with these lights but I have no problems and it only gets warm like an electronic ballast should.
My thought pattern was the same as yours. When and if the ballasts goes I will replace it with an Icecap ballast which doesn't require any retro fit for the Odyssea's. The Avatar is one of my Zoa's about 22" down the tank.

This is a great point. You should go to this thread and see if The Grim Reefer could make some suggestions for you. I know he has come up with many combinations for different people based on what they like and are experiencing in their tank.

Sometimes a change is good. I got tired of MHs and went to T5s.

I'm sure I'll go back in a few years. Or maybe I'll cut a big hole in my roof and go solar tubing....

hey plancton, go for it and post the results, altough i am still happy with t5 it wouldnt hurt to see if you get better results, good luck

Sana

That is precisely the reason I bought something else. I looked all over craigslist, here on reef central, ebay, etc. I ended up with a nice setup with ice cap ballasts and new Coralife 10K bulbs. Also had atinic supplement. I ended up paying the same for this slightly used fixture. I am glad I did not get the Odyssea. Do not skimp on light. Just search and search and the right fixture will come along. Settling for Odyssea will likely have you shopping to replace it in a couple short years. Best to buy quality and never look back.

I´m having second thoughts again, the reason is that I created a thread about the superman monti which is my primary concern in terms of getting the colors right:

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1655621

As you can see, people are showing colors that are exactly what I thought could only be achieved with MH. But they´re using T5.

I change my bulbs every year but all I´ve always had is JBL brand, but now I have a friend who can get me ATI.

The other thing is that the superman is getting more color daily, I thought it had reached its limit but put it higher and this time it isn´t bleaching, probably due to the fact that alkalinity now is right.

Also I have 6 bulbs with independent parabolic reflectors but only 3 of them are powered by IC660 and the rest by cheap mexican ballasts, the ones powered by IC660 do look brighter, but don´t know if the ones on cheap ballasts are underpowered. Anyways, I could get another IC660 and make things brighter, plus with a good brand of bulb I could get the same as those guys in the superman monti under t5 thread.

So, I´m going to wait, 1 year with upgraded t5 setup and see what happens.

Send a note to GrimReefer on that thread I posted above and he will give you some great advice on how to "position" your lights from front to back to get the greatest PAR output.

I strongly recommend checking into differnt bulb combinations. Just 1 bulb out of a set can drastically change the way things look - ambiently, and after a few weeks in the corals themselves.

I absolutely love having a 460nm (purple) set in with some really great blues. I use very little white and would have colors absolutely popping. You just need the right combo.

I pref T5 to being cooler and typically less expensive overall than running MH. In your case with so many bulbs, though, you might use less power with MH.

I'd say its worth a shot using different bulbs. Go with ATI/UVL. Geismann makes great products but I did not like their T5s everything did look pastel or washed out. The ATI/UVL made everything vibrant looking.
