Southdown/Yardrite Tropical Playsand, where?

Been trying to find this stuff as I am expecting my new tank this month. Has anyone been able to find it in Sac, or a worthwhile replacement?

You'd be lucky to find it, even on the East coast these days. I've found best deals on sand by waiting for someone to "get out" or downgrade.

Southdown is an urban legend...it doesn't exist. Don't waste your time looking. OK, it isn't an urban legend, but you will not find it on the west coast. Its never reached this coast and never will.

I agree with Kevin, picking up used sand is a great cheap route to go. With a thorough rinsing its as good as new.

IMHO re-using sand and live rock is indeed a good way to save a little money and I agree with Mark that it should be carefully washed (Unless it is coming directly from another tank and you are looking for biodiversity). One thing to watch through is the Phosphate content of either. This is easily checked, just soak in some RO/DI for a day or two and then check the Phosphate level. Use a test kit that sensitive enough to detect low PO4 levels or take to a fish store for testing.

Yep, reusing sand, etc, would be great.

If the rest of ya'll didnt always beat me to every single "LR/LS FS" thread.
