Spacer

My aquarium is 1/2" glass. When I try to put the rubber spacer back on at the 1/2" point, I can never get one of the spacers to push all the way in. As a result, one side seems less "flush" than the others. When I try to attach the wet side to the tank with the dry side holding it - no luck (it immediately slips at least 1/3 down from center of the wet side or just falls off. I can attach it to the aquarium with only the thin black rubber disk in between and it seems to work fine - but the motor gets very hot when it is close to high (after the 24 hour warm-up period). I read somewhere not to use it without the spacer backing because of this - but the one that came with mine is not working right (pins seem a little flemsy and won't all go in). What should I do?

If it seems to be working fine with just the disk in between, do I need to buy a new spacer? I'm a little confused because I think I read that you don't even need the spacer for glass over 1/2" thick and then I think I read you always have to use a spacer?
This glass is at least 1/2" thick.

Then you need to do a measurement and see exactly how thick it is. If it is 5/8 or 3/4 you do not need the spacer. If it is 1/2 inch you need the spacer. Check the instructions directly on the spacer itself as it is fully explained. The newer spacers have a 5/8 setting where the older spacers did not.
If the thickness of your glass calls for you to use the spacer, do so. Failure to use it can result in premature wear of pump components.
