Does anyone have any experience with the splendid pseudochromis (Pseudochromis splendens)? I saw a beautiful specimen at the LFS this morning; they are asking $39.99, and they are much better looking in person than online. Thanks for any info!

I got one a couple years ago, it was captive bred from ORA.

I placed it in a 50 gallon by itself, with lr and such, but I could not get it to eat, and it eventually dissappeared.

I have not seen another one since.

They live in and around sponges in nature, so that may play a roal in their health.

They are a moderatly common Pseudochromis species in the trade. They reach approximately three inches in length and are quite similar to P. fridmani in temprament (quite peaceful for a dottyback, so long as you obey the one-male-per-aquarium rule - and absolutely no more than one individual per square half-meter of footprint). Generally speaking, they're not too hard to care for - I am not aware of any species-specific care requirements.

Like most of the small dottybacks, this is not a long-lived fish. Keeping one for more than five years is quite rare.

Avoid Pseudocheilinus sp. wrasses (the sixline complex) and dwarf angels in the same aquarium as any Pseudochromis. They very rarely tolerate each other.

Well, I'm already well stocked, so this would be the last fish I add, and since I haven't ever seen one in my area, N. California, (even working at a pet/fish store for 6 years) it seems pretty unique and interesting. Any more info would be helpful and thanks for everything so far...[:

I loved mine. Had him for about 3 years. He was a model citizen, but I've read a lot of reports of them eating inverts.

I had one for a while (wild caught). Beautiful fish, but somewhat aggressive. It spent most of it's time hiding in the rocks. Mine ate a large cleaner shrimp once and could probably eat small gobies and such.

I do have a large cleaner shrimp that I'm rather fond of, it's about 2.5" long. Jmicky, how big was yours that was eaten?

It had a body size of about 2 inches. They were together for a long time untill one day I noticed the shrimp gone and the psudo with a huge belly. The psuedo was pretty good sized, about 3 inches.

its one of the more docile pseuochromis-- I'd get it, they usually sell for $49 plus shipping

i have the scott dottybacks, pseudochromis book if you want

The one @ the LFS is only about 2" long; and my cleaner is bigger. Will he still pick at it? What about my flame scallop? Thanks everybody...

That's a good price. I've had one in my 240 for about 8 months with a few cleaner shrimp and no problems. As long as you add the pseudo after the shrimp i think its fine.

i've had one for about 6 months now and he's not too bad. He picked on a fairy wrasse that was introduced after him. Other than that i have a cleaner shrimp, and fire shrimp that he doesn't bother. spends a lot of time in the rocks.
