Sponge Info

I have about three apparent yellow sponges growing adjacent to some xenia. The sponges seemed to have just grown out of nowhere a few months ago.

How big can they get? The one in the pic (which happens to be the largest one) is only about 2cm in length. A couple of smaller xenia stalks seem to be growing from under it:

What are some do's and don'ts in regards to caring for them? I presume I'm not to expose them to air, but other than that they appear to be doing fine on their own.

There is no way to tell how big they will get, but most in the hobby stay fairly small. Other than not exposing them to air (which isn't even an issue for many species) there aren't a whole lot of rules for their care. They either do well or they don't. Yours seem to be doing fine without any help from you.

I have one like that which has grown into about a 2 inch ball. Unlike a lot of sponges, mine likes a lot of light.

Best of luck,

Roy

Thanks for the info!

Hmmm, it almost looks like it's waving at you....

My wife calls it 'sponge bob' :D

I have had a couple that look just like that. I found them by accident and they had been doing well in my tank. My best advice is to put it back exactly as it was in your tank.
