spray bar

This may be a dumb question but I'm a little confused on the concept of a spray bar. Should it be vertical or horizontal?

If you are talking about a sump return.... I ran mine all the way across the back of my 6' tank about 1" below the water surface. so... horizontal

A spray bar is basically a way of spreading flow over a greater area than just a plain hose.
If it's used in a sump it's usually to spread the water more evenly over filtration media. (so it sits horizontal)

If your using it in a tank it doesn't really matter which way it goes.
A lot of people mount them horizontal, on or above the water line to agitate the surface and help gas exchange.

A friend of mine runs one vertically aimed across the back of his tank which does a great job of blowing all the crap out from behind his rock work.

It's really up to you.

Rich.
