IMHO....usually algae develop in our tank hard to attach a healthy coral, only weak coral colony. You may want to find way to cure coral from barely survive to healthy grow. Watch coral PE and encrust to base rock are two sign of a healthy coral. Check water parameters and observe what other coral performance, then share, may help others understand your tank better.

It's common for algae to start to form on a coral once the skeleton is exposed. I don't believe it's the algae causing the death.

Whats your tank parameters?

PO .02
NO3 less then 5ppm
NO2 undetectable
DKH less then 8.0
Salinity 1.025
Calcium 400ppm

The colonies I have that encrusted to the rock seem to be fine, I guess these others just aren't doing well
