SPS tank turnover question

Well I have my new 29g setup going well. I have a rio 2100 as a return (the new one that isn't like the Exxon Valdez) which is plenty for that imo.

However I am trying to figure out how I should set up powerheads inside of the tank. What would everyone put inside a tank of this size to get a fair amount of movement? I mean I would like some sort of system that has nice turbulent flow, but the tank is too small for Tunzes or anything nice like that.

What about those hydor rotating tips? Or possibly a seio setup?

Any ideas are welcome!

i have a 26 gallon bowfront with 1 SEIO 820, 2 MJ 900s and 1 MJ 600 on a timer (only the MJs...not the SEIO). Also have a MAG 5 on a SQWD on return. i thought the SEIO would be too big for the tank, but it's not that bad in the corner.

i think that a lot of SPS folks are using SEIOs in their small tanks these days. as long as you "cross streams" with the MJs, it comes out quite chaotic. the SPS love it in mine.

good luck. again, sorry about the "Exxon Valdez."

oh yeah, i have heard good things abou the HYDORs. never tried one though.

I have used plenty of the hydor rotating deflectors and they are cheap, but kindof big in the tank. I would reccomend a couple of seio's too, like 2 820s, if the streams hit eachother you wind up with really caitoc flow.

Yeah I'm really curious about the hydors. I have a Hagen powerhead 402 lying around, think one would fit on that?

Also I have heard about SEIOs not working well with timers so I guess your setup mokujin is probably a good idea.

Do you think that a pair of 820s would cause a sandstorm though? Thats 1640gph in there haha.

i'm running hydors in my 37 mixed reef. my problems with them are:

1.) only good up to 300 gph each.
2.) cuts your flow down considerably
3.) they are BIG
4.) the little tiny snails that come out of your lr at night will jamb the crap out of them - constant maintenance.

other that that, my corals love them

i've heard either way about SEIOs and timers. most say they will break (as does the manufacturer), so mine is on constantly. in theory, my 26 tank is pushing about 1800 gph. no sandstorms. all depends on how you configure your pumps.

Ever consider drilling the tank for a closed loop so you dont need all those ugly powerheads inside the tank. I just set-up a 29RR gallon barebottom with two returns and one drain. Mag 18 for the CL and a Rio 1700 for the return(will be replaced with a mag 7). So if I subtract the head loss for each pump I have calculated that my turnover rate will be 35-40x This tank will be mainly SPS tho.

Good Luck!

Yeah I didn't really want to drill the tank, that just added another factor where I could crack the tank haha.

Anyways, I'll try a pair of seios then. Thanks for the input guys.

You could get a small Wave2k. I have the center unit on my 30 cube and its awesome. No ugly powerheads or wires all over the tank, and the flow is insane, not to mention pretty natural looking.

I would also go with a couple of seio maybe the 820 would be nice. I have two 620 seios and so far they work great.

You do not need to drill the tank for a closed loop if you want one. You could go with the "over the back" closed loop. Just make sure you prime it first.

Incase you do not know what I am talking about. You take the suction over the back of the tank and down to the pump the back up. Once the flow starts the suction will keep things going. I ran one on my 110 for years with no problems. The only thing to watch for is to make sure to remember to fill the lines before starting up the pump or you will burn it up.

The long PVC to the right is the intake for the closed loop. You can also see 3 of the 4 returns. Number 4 is behing the MJ in the corner. I had a mag 18 split between 2 SCWDs. Not real effecent but did the job. Sorry I do not have any other pic. I no longer have this set up.
