So again im 100% new to this all. We have a 30gal tank and its cycling as im typing..anyway my question is when we bought our live rock a star fish came out, its no bigger then my pinky nail and its def. alive because its always changing spots on the rock. Is it going to surive while my tank cycles?
Thanks for your time!

try googling 'asterina sp' starfish, and see if thats the hitchhiker you got. if yes, I'd say it will probably survive, they don't die so easy

If that is the type of star fish i have its it ok to have in the tank. We are going to be adding clown fish and tangs later?

Be carefull tangs dont fit in 30 gal.

asterina can be pinkish as well, I have some. you should determine if it is a asterina, or a baby brittle star. though both are reef safe and won't bother your fish

It could be anything (since there's no pic), but this is my own best guess based on your description

They're also the most common! :)

Here's a decent hitchiker link:

Unfortunately Ron Shimek took down (or moved) the other one I used to reference.

..and I second the tang comment...you better read up on them..don't fall prey to the old Finding Nemo bug and wind up with unhappy and eventually dead fish.

Thanks i went to that web site and clicked on the star fish pics and the second one down looks like mine! im excited i just really hope he lives through the cycling!

Let me tell you...if that's the one you have, then that's probably not the only one. :) Take a look at your tank some night...a few hours after ALL the lights in the room have been off. You'll probably see a bunch...if you don't...just wait. :) They're great to have though, so no worries.

If you have a flashlight that can shine red you may also see a bunch of other critters that would normally scatter at the first sign of white light. But you have to wait until the tank's been completely dark for a bit before the night-time crew makes a full appearance.
